I have been designing for twenty years now, but in a different field: in graphic design and brand architecture.
When I started designing quilts, I had no idea how to design them or how to sew them. Not even how to sew anything: I had never used a sewing machine before. It all started in March 2020, when the pandemic broke out and I was confined to my home. I discovered the world of quilting almost by chance and I was completely hooked.
I started learning the basics and after a couple of months and a lot of practicing, i began to explore the quilting community and discover this amazing magazine: Curated Quilts.
I had already sent a design to a magazine, Make Modern, and they chose my NotreDame Quilt to be featured in March 2021.
I had already sent a design to a magazine, Make Modern, and they chose my NotreDame Quilt to be featured in March 2021. This was already a great achievement for me, being a total newbie into this.
But then i discovered Curated Quilts, and this magazine totally captivated me. I saw that the next issue had PLUS as its theme, and I decided to design a quilt with that design element. This is the starting point for the Mars Attacks Quilt.
This quilt is part of a series of quilts that are inspired by movies. The series started with “Chromosome” and “Magnolia” and right now I am in the process of creating “Vertigo”.It is pieced using HST’s, rectangles, flying geeses and some other blocks, for a total of 256 blocks. They are mainly 3,5″x3,5″ finished, except for a few in different sizes. My intention with the creation of this quilt is to give a new perspective to the plus symbol. For the composition I have rotated it and added a shadow to generate a 3D effect, arranging them in multiple layers to get depth in it. I have quilted it using parallel diagonal lines, following the pluses lines, using 0.5 inch spacing for the background lines and 1.25 inch for the Pluses lines, using threads matching each color.

I never expected to be featured, but when i received their reply saying that it was going to be selected i could not believe it!
But after several weeks, i received an e-mail in which there was diplayed the cover of the PLUS issue, and it was my quilt!. Can you imagine my surprise?
Here i leave you the cover and interior double page. If you have never read this journal before, you should, there are many beutilful quilts to inspire you and very good articles. There is also a quilt pattern written by Amy Ellis, founder of the magazine.
